Traitor's Sun by Marion Zimmer Bradley

Published by Daw Books

Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel

Traitor's Sun by Marion Zimmer Bradley takes up some fifteen years after The Shadow Matrix, and thus is not a direct sequel. However, it shares many of the same problems, including diffuse writing, excessive exposition and a reliance on endless chatter to move the plot forward.

The Terran Federation (there is no explanation for the sudden change in nomenclature, whereas the older books always called it the Terran Empire) is undergoing an unpleasant change in policy as the rapacious Expansionists come into power. Meanwhile, Darkover faces a crisis when Regis Hastur has a massive stroke and dies.

The Terran spaceport commander gets wind of this and hatches a plot to slaughter all the Comyn during the funeral and hand over the now-leaderless world to the Terrans. However, Mikhial and Marguerida's brave young son Domenic overhears this and enables the Comyn to prepare a counter-ambush. In the end the Terrans are foiled and they all pack up and leave, while the Comyn wonder how long it will be before the Terrans return to trouble them anew.
