The Gathering Flame by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald

Published by Tor Books

Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel

In the Mageworlds trilogy, the First Magewar was history, their parents' war. Now and then the younger generation would hear a little about that terrible conflict, but it remains firmly in the background.

This novel takes us back to those days, when Perada Rosselyn and Jos Metadi were young. Trouble is on the horizon, with more and more raids from the mysterious Mageworlders. Perada is born to power, the heir to the Iron Crown of matriarchial Entibor. Jos is the owner of his own starship, officially a merchantman but heavily armed because of the dangers that lie in the areas he frequents. It would seem unlikely that they should ever meet.

Then all hell breaks loose and Jos Metadi saves Perada from an assassination attempt. The next thing she knows, she is running for her life and has just been given a berth on Jos' freebooting crew. The war with the maurading Magelords is now on with a vengeace.
