The sense of place is very strong in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic of Middle Earth. Maps and lands are very important in all the books. In The Hobbit, an ancient map is an essential part of the story, providing clues to the recovery of the Dwarvish treasure from the dragon.
This volume goes beyond the maps in the books themselves to explore the world of Middle Earth in more detail. See the probable layouts of such ancient elvish strongholds as Narogothrond and Gondolin from the First Age. There is also a detailed map of Numenor, something that is not found in any of the original books.
In all, this work will be an excellent companion volume to the stories of Middle Earth. The material presented here will increase the fan's appreciation of this complex and fascinating world.
