All the Weyrs of Pern takes up where The White Dragon and Renegades of Pern left off. The original human settlement and the AVIAS computer have been rediscovered. Now humanity must find a way to make use of it without destroying Pernese society.

In the thousands of years since the original settlers left it, the semi-sentient AVIAS has been working on a way to end the threat of Thread permanently. However, doing so will require that the Pernese redevelop many of the lost technologies of their ancestors, something that cannot come without social change, change that will be violently opposed by those who see it as a threat to their power base.

In many ways this novel reads rather like Anne McCaffrey's equivalent of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's throwing Sherlock Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls. It is as though she wanted to tie up the story of Pern for good so that she could get away to writing other stories of more interest to her. However, her fans and publisher refused to let her do it, as the appearance of The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall and The Dolphins of Pern not long afterward demonstrate.
