Chapterhouse Dune

Published by Ace Books

Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel

Chapterhouse Dune is the final volume of the Dune saga. There is some evidence that Frank Herbert may have been planning a seventh Dune book, but his death brought the story of Arrakis to a permanent close.

Chapterhouse Dune takes up where Heretics of Dune left off. The Honored Matres are closing in on Rakis, determined to control the source of melange. The Bene Gesserit have their own plans, which involve mastery of the terrible secret of the Tlielaxu axolotl tanks.

When the Honored Matres discover that they cannot take Rakis so easily as they had planned, they decide to destroy it rather than let anyone else have it. However, the Bene Gesserit have a desperate backup plan that may allow them to preserve enough of Rakis' extraordinary ecology to transplant sandworms, and thus to ensure themselves a continuing supply of the melange they must have for their mental abilities. However, to do so will mean paying a terrible price.
