Dragonquest by Anne McCaffrey

Published by Del Rey Books

Reviewed by Leigh Kimmel

In Dragonflight, Lessa found Pern's salvation in its past, bringing forth the dragonriders of the five abandoned Weyrs from four hundred Turns' past. When they arrived they were hailed as Pern's saviors.

However things rarely go so well for long. Seven Turns later, trouble is brewing between modern and Oldtimer. Pern has changed much in the four hundred Turns the time-travellers have skipped over in less than a day of subjective time. Cultural conflict is inevitable, but when it involves those trusted with defending the world from Thread, everyone is endangered.

Worse yet, the old cries of parasitism among the Lords Holder, the leaders of the common folk of Pern, have not died entirely. When young Lord Jaxom and his Weyrfolk friend Felessan discover an ancient telescope, it suddenly becomes possible to get a clear view of the Red Star from which Thread comes. Now the dissident Lords Holder argue that the dragonfolk can get the necessary co-ordinates for dragons to go to the Red Star and destroy Thread at its source.

F'lar, Weyrleader of Benden Weyr, must find a way to resolve all these demands before they destroy all of Pern.
