This novel concludes the Mageworlds trilogy begun in The Price of the Stars and continued in Starpilot's Grave. Beka and her brothers are now thoroughally emmeshed in the Second Magewar. Everywhere they look, the Magelords are pressing back the Republic's forces. Defeat seems certain unless something can be done.

However, it is no longer so certain which side is the good guys. Guild-trained Adept Llannat Hyfid now bears a Magelord's ebon rod and commands a Magebuilt ship. A mutinous admiral has led a major fleet into rebellion against the Republic, forcing junior officers to decide where their loyalties properly lie.

Somehow Beka and her friends must steer a course to true peace. But if that means embracing those they once knew only as enemies, can they do it. More important, can they convince the older generation, those who lived through the First Magewar, to stand by such a peace?
